Have you ever wondered about the St. Lucas Victory Garden that is located
next to the cemetery garage and the ball fields?
The St. Lucas UCC Victory Garden was organized in July 2009, built by
volunteers, and was intended for the use and enjoyment of the St. Lucas
UCC Church membership to grow vegetables and edible herbs and for
fostering fellowship among gardeners and visitors. The Victory Garden is
also available for rent by neighbors in the surrounding area. The white
vinyl fence was installed in June 2010 with funds provided for the fence
through the Memorial Fund via donations in memory of Norm and Lorraine
Ameling.
The original founders of the Victory Garden designated 10 plots for growing
produce and then donated the produce grown to a food pantry. As these
original founders no longer were able to work these 10 plots, the decision
was made to sell these plots and give a monetary donation each year to
the Affton Food Pantry. The St. Lucas Preschool frequently visits our
garden to see how seeds grow and to learn about gardening. The St.
Lucas Victory Garden is a gold standard among local victory gardens. We
have had other groups over the years come to us and tour our garden
before starting their own.
Gardeners each pay $20 per plot per season and grow everything from
corn, squash, tomatoes, lettuce, green peppers, cucumbers, herbs,
pumpkins, potatoes and watermelons. We’ve had some good years with
abundant produce and some years with little rain or too much rain when
crops weren’t so plentiful! But gardeners keep coming back with hope and
prayer. We may have a few plots available for sale this season, so
if you are interested in trying your hand at gardening, please let
the church office know or contact Debbie Ball at
