On Sunday, January 12, we welcomed Darlene Sowell, the President and CEO of Unleashing Potential. Unleashing Potential works to close the opportunity gap for children and youth by building on their strengths. They create educational and empowering experiences through early childhood education, after school programs, youth development and enrichment camps.
Unleashing Potential has recently integrated STEM and geospatial concepts into their school age services curricula. This year's summer camps ended with a cardboard boat regatta where students were able to showcase their math, measurement, and teamwork skills.
The early childhood education program is working to support families during the current childcare shortage. They are partnering with businesses in their neighborhood to serve employees in need of safe, reliable childcare.
In the school age services program they work in the Ferguson Florissant and University City school districts, as well as one charter school in St. Louis City. The focus is on homework help, STEM, and social emotional health.
The summer program served over 225 children last year. They are an especially valuable resource to working families as they provide care for full days.
