Black History Month - St. Louis Legends

Throughout the month of February we have been celebrating Black History Month by highlighting influential St. Louisans who have made an impact on our community and our world. Each of these musicians has left an incredible legacy and their lives tell the story of Black history in America.



Scott Joplin, known as the king of ragtime, lived in St. Louis from 1900 to 1907. During that time he created many of his most influential and well-known works. His signature style of blending classical music with syncopated rhythms has influenced generations of musicians.





Josephine Baker was born in St. Louis in 1906. She became a world famous singer, dancer, and activist. Her work influenced many artist including Diana Ross, Madonna, and Beyonce. Throughout her career, Baker refused to perform for segregated audiences.







Chuck Berry was a pioneer of rock and roll and was born in St. Louis in 1926. Known for his unique guitar style, famous duck walk, and many hit songs, Berry influenced some of the biggest rock bands in the world. His legacy lives on in St. Louis on the Delmar Loop.





Tina Turner was raised in East St. Louis. She was known as the queen of rock and roll. In addition to her music she acted in movies and had a Broadway show made about her life. She won 12 Grammy awards and was the first black woman to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.




What an honor to celebrate these St. Louis legends during this Black History Month.
