Victory and Giving Garden Dedication

Sunday Morning, March 21, 2010

The dedication ceremony was held in the rain and cold. We gathered under the pavilion and felt warm in the mission of the gardens and their meaning for us and the community.

The St. Lucas Victory Garden is located on the north side of historic St. Lucas Cemetery between the garage and the pavilion. Forty raised beds were constructed by many hands in September 2009. Each 4' x 10' bed is constructed of direct ground contact lumber and a combination of 50% Meramec River top soil, 25% mulch, and 25% manure. Our thanks to Norrenberns Lumber & Hardware and Fritz Landscaping for their generous contributions. In June 2010 a white vinyl fence was added. Chesterfield Fence & Deck provided quality construction and a significant price discount (see the new pictures below!).

The Giving Garden consists of 10 beds and is tended to by the leadership group and their group of volunteers. They are responsible for the planning, planting, weeding, watering and the harvesting of a variety of vegetables for donation to a local food pantry (currently Joint Neighborhood Ministry). Please contact Jerry Pensel at 314-849-1582 if you would like to help with this worthwhile endeavor.

Each spring there may be spaces available for rent...at a cost of $50.00 for the initial two year period. Each "tenant" is responsible for their own planting, weeding, fertilizing, watering...etc... water is easily accessible. Contact Steering Committee Chairperson, Chris Gumper at 314-849-6495 if you are interested. Come Grow with Us!!!
